"CHAIRS!"
John Hutton's sense of scale and proportion redefined 20th century transitional design. Celebrated around the world as the pre-eminent American designer of his generation; his dedication to comfort and quality raised the bar of the entire industry. While still a student in the late sixties at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Hutton began his design career translating and updating antiques for Louis Maslow & Sons, a New York reproduction house. In 1971 he migrated to San Francisco where he first received recognition in the industry as a designer for Randolph & Hein and Regency House. In 1978, the New York interior designer Angelo Donghia, who already had a textile company, recruited John to help him start a furniture division. When Angelo passed away in 1985, Hutton stepped in as Design Director and hired Joe Doyle as his design partner. For two decades at Donghia, Hutton and Doyle created the template for a transitional aesthetic that incorporated a seamless blend of function, proportion and timelessness. During this period Donghia experienced exponential growth, expanded into the international market with the most celebrated collection of luxury furnishings in the world. Also during that time, Hutton collaborated with David and Ann Sutherland to found Sutherland Teak and Perennials Fabrics: bringing luxury and glamour to the outdoor furnishing market. In 1998, after passing the title of Design Director to Jennifer Hutton, Hutton and Doyle left Donghia to found John Hutton International with Hutton's son Douglas. Dually based in the United States and France, JHI continues to produce collections for Sutherland Furniture, Holly Hunt, Flexform, Interna, and Hickory Business Furniture. JHI has also partnered with the legendary French manufacturer Counot Blandin to create a series of boutique collections under the banner of Hutton Collections, which include John Hutton Textiles, Ensemble London, Collection Pierre, and PiiArt. In 2013 John Hutton International formally became part owner of Counot Blandin. Hutton passed away in 2006 but under the direction of Doyle and Douglas, the company continues the trajectory that defines the transition from the historic to the innovative.
